CAL's language proficiency tests are designed to measure the general proficiency levels in listening and reading attained by English-speaking learners of a foreign language.
The tests consist of 100 to 150 four-option multiple-choice questions; the exact number varies by test. Proficiency tests are available in Chinese and Polish.
These tests can only be ordered by proctors. Proctors should e-mail assessments@cal.org for further information.
When ordering, proctors should
provide the following information to assessments@cal.org:
- Title/position and affiliation of the supervisor;
- Approximate testing date;
- Number of examinees expected;
- Whether rush delivery is desired (at the institution's expense)
Each order takes approximately 2-3 weeks to process. An order with incomplete information will result in a delay in delivery.
All test materials are mailed to the institution administering the test. Students mark their responses on machine-scorable answer sheets that are returned to CAL for scoring. The tests consist of 100 to 150 four-option multiple-choice questions; the exact number varies by test.
- Listening comprehension: This section of each test consists of 50 to 60 questions based on dialogues between two speakers or on passages spoken by a single speaker. Provided on audiocassette tape, the passages are drawn from authentic materials such as radio broadcasts and public announcements. Response options are in English.
- Reading comprehension: This section varies by test. All reading passages are drawn from authentic sources such as newspapers, magazines, schedules, and tickets
