Phase One of the Refugee Orientation Impact Study

What are the current refugee orientation practices in the United States? What outcome measures can be used to study the impact of these practices?

In this report, for the first time in over 20 years, resettlement agencies' current refugee orientation practices are reviewed, and emerging program models are identified. The baseline data provides a useful tool for service providers; government departments and agencies involved with refugee services; special interest groups; and community church, and volunteer groups working with refugees.

Additionally, the report points to the need for further research on measuring orientation's impact on refugees' adaptation to life in the United States. As a starting point, the authors gathered agency responses about behaviors and attitudes that lead refugees to successfully resettle. The next step is to take the information gathered here to determine which practices are most effective in easing refugees into productive and fulfilling lives in the United States. (47 pp)
