This new professional development DVD illustrates a research-based model of sheltered instruction, known as the SIOP Model, that has raised achievement levels of English language learners. The video footage provides a valuable resource for teacher educators and staff developers to provide ongoing development to teachers of content subjects in strategies and techniques for adapting instruction to the academic needs of these students. Filmed in a documentary style, this DVD presents each of the SIOP’s eight components through footage from the math, science, and social studies classrooms of six exemplary teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The teachers elaborate on their lessons and SIOP techniques and teacher educators and researchers describe the theory and research that support the model. The SIOP Model was derived from a study on the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol sponsored by the Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence. (84 minutes) The SIOP Model: Sheltered Instruction for Academic Achievement serves as a companion to Using the SIOP Model: Professional Development Manual for Sheltered Instruction.
