The Self-Instructional Rater Training Kit consists of four parts: the Rater Training Kit Manual, three Rater Training Kit Tapes, the Rater Training Kit Workbook, and the Rater Training Kit Reference Guide for Scoring, in addition to the SOPI itself.

The Rater Training Kit Manual contains general information about the test, information on how to score performances on each SOPI task and how to assign global ratings, and information on how to administer the test. Additionally, the Manual provides justifications for the scores awarded to the sample examinee responses. These responses are used to illustrate speaker performances at the various levels of proficiency covered by the test.

The samples and exercises found on the three Rater Training Kit Tapes are excerpts from actual examinees. Tapes A and B contain samples of examinee performances on the SOPI tasks to illustrate different levels of proficiency. They also include examinee excerpts to be used as practice exercises. Tape C contains practice calibration sets and the complete performance of one examinee on the test to be used for practice in rating a complete test. Accompanying the manual and tapes are the Rater Training Kit Workbook and the Reference Guide for Scoring. The Workbook contains exercise sheets that remind raters to look for key points as they rate. The forms also provide space for the raters to take notes and to record their ratings.

The Reference Guide contains a copy of the ACTFL Speaking Proficiency Guidelines and the answer keys for ratings on the exercises, practice calibrations and full-length test, as well as justifications for all of these ratings.

With the exception of the workbook, all materials may be re-used. The kit is ideal for professional development of language educators who need hands-on understanding of oral proficiency.
